The Final 10% That Makes 90% of a Difference

When we begin planning a new space, we think about the layout and the big pieces that will go into the room.  But often clients want to stop their project after those big items are delivered leaving the last 10%, as we often refer to accessorizing and styling, to be done later because they lack the vision for the complete room.

The problem with leaving off the styling is that those details are key in finishing a room and making the space feel thought out.

Styling, however, can really feel overwhelming.  Scouring the Internet or a local store for the right pieces in scale and color while not being too “matchy-matchy” can feel like an insurmountable task. We wanted to share some pointers, tips and things we think about when picking items for a room and planning the styled space.

Vary Heights and Sizes

When styling shelves, use a variety of heights and widths to create visual interest. You can do this with individual items or by grouping several smaller items together to take up a larger space.  Be sure to have heavier shelves and lighter shelves to break up the visual space. In general, you don’t want to overcrowd. Less is more when it comes to accessorizing.

When In Doubt, Stack Books

We love using books to add height to another accessory.  They provide a great foundation for smaller accessories, or can work well on their own.  Just be sure to keep in mind the colors of the binding and that you like having those particular titles on display. This is a great place to add your personality to the room, like putting out a book about your favorite breed of dogs or if you play tennis, a book about Wimbledon.

Add Greenery in Your Styling

We believe every room should have a pop of greenery in it.  There is something calming about bringing the outdoors into you space.  Whether that is a vase of fresh flowers, a beautiful leafy plant, some succulents or even a really good fake plant, finding a spot for something green will go a long way.

Utilize the Throw

A colorful throw is a great addition to any living or family room.  They help break up the upholstery fabric, add a pop of color and provide a softness to the space.  Don’t overthink laying the throw. The less you fuss with it, the better it looks!

When Styling, Don’t Undersize Your Art

Art should make a statement, and the size is important in allowing that impact.  Worry less about it “matching” your space and more about the feelings it illicit. This is a great place to really add your personality into the room.  If you are fun and whimsical, show it.  If are into boating, hang something nautical.  Just let your personality shine.

Use Fabrics to Add Pattern and Color

Accent pillows are important accessories in finishing a space.  They are another great to introduce pattern and color to help create a cohesive design.

Consider Your Lighting as Part of Your Accessories

Light fixtures can be a sculptural piece of art.  Don’t underestimate the impact the right overhead light or lamp can have on a room. And don’t be afraid to mix metals when it come to lighting and accessories.  There’s no reason you can’t have a gold lamp and an oil-rubbed bronze chandelier.

Don’t Neglect the Windows

Drapery and window treatments are an important part of finishing a room.  The fabric fills visual wall space and softens harsh edges helping to breakup wood trims.  It can also be another great place to introduce pattern and color.
